Locked Out? 4 Steps You Need To Take When You’re Locked Out Of Your Car

If you've locked yourself out of the car, you're not alone. Studies show that roughly 4 million people lock themselves out each year. Luckily, you don't need to be locked out permanently. You just need to take a few steps. Now that your keys are locked in the car, here are some things you need to do right away.

1. Check the Doors and Windows

If your keys are locked in the car, the first thing you need to do is check all the doors and windows. You might have left one open without realizing it. You don't want to stand outside only to find out later that one of your doors were unlocked or a window was rolled down a bit. If one of your windows is rolled down a bit, you may be able to use a wire clothes hanger to unlock the door. If everything is locked up tight, you'll need to move on to the next steps on this list.

2. Contact a Family Member

If you've locked yourself out of the car, you need to contact a family member as soon as possible. They may have a spare key you can use to get back inside. Not only that, but you'll want to let them know where you are. If they're nearby, have them come sit with you while you wait for help. This step is particularly helpful if you've locked your keys out in the middle of winter, the middle of the night, or in an unsafe area of town.

3. Call an Auto Locksmith

Once you've checked your car and you've contacted a family member, you'll need to call a locksmith. Make sure that you call an auto locksmith though. An auto locksmith will have the necessary tools to get you back into your car. While you're at it, have them make a spare key for you. That way, you can hide the spare key somewhere on your car so that you don't have to deal with the stress the next time.

4. Call the Police

If you're locked out of your car, and a locksmith can't get to you quickly, you need to call the police. Most police officers carry equipment with them that can get you back into your car. If they can't get you back into your car, they can sit with you while you wait for the locksmith to arrive.
